Kuching has more historic character than KK, and contrary to another post, is not spread out in the area that you would be interested in visiting (which can be walked across in approx 20-30 minutes) I would recommend Kuching, its waterfront in my opinion is more scenic than that of KK, with trees lining it providing much needed shade.
